Week 2

Hello everyone! This past week has been pretty hectic but it's also been pretty great. I finished the unknown tests, though they took a while. Through the gram staining, I determined the sample to be gram positive cocci. After looking at the chart with all the tests, I performed the catalase test. The sample fizzed in the hydrogen peroxide, determining it as catalase positive and calling for the glucose fermentation test.
The glucose fermentation test proved to be somewhat problematic. The medium turned yellow, meaning the sample was acid positive. However, when I told Josh he said that I was supposed to get no reaction. So I inoculated a new test tube but this time with the broth instead of the plate. This time, the test ended up having no change -- meaning the sample was negative for both acid and gas. The bacteria I had ended up having was micrococcus luteus, which was the correct one.

  1. Hi Luisa, isn’t strange when results we aren’t looking for happen? I’ve definitely learned that while at S-STEM/TRAIN! In your case, it’s good that you ended up with sufficient evidence to show that your bacteria was micrococcus luteus. I wonder what could have happened to make your medium turn yellow?
