Why STEM?

     I first became interested in Science when I was little and my parents showed me the movie Free Willy. There has never been a time when I have not loved animals, however, for some reason I really grew to like killer whales since watching that movie. It was my dream to go see them at SeaWorld and maybe work there as a trainer until I learned how damaging life in captivity is for animals, especially those as intelligent as orcas. I would watch a lot of documentaries and shows about animals and found it very interesting how some animals, like orcas, can be so intelligent and similar to humans. Then, in high school, I took an AP Biology class. We had the choice between that or Physics, and Biology seemed more interesting. I grew to really love the class and did well in it. When it came time to apply to colleges, I could not decide on a major but remembered how much I liked Biology, so I started community college by trying out the Associate in Science degree and focusing on Biology. I also thought majoring in a Biology related science would also give me more of a chance to do something related to killer whales, if I ever decided to go into something like that. In community college I also took a couple of Psychology courses, which also interested me. I am really interested in the brain and how it affects our behavior and animals' behaviors. Now that I am here, I am thinking about looking more into Neuroscience or something to do with Conservation Biology.

Week 14

Hello everyone! This is the last week of the semester. I'm kind of relieved, but also sad it went by so quickly. The last conference was surprisingly a lot of fun. I was really nervous starting out, but things went pretty well. I actually got to answer a bunch of questions. The first judge that went up to me was pretty intimidating but all the other ones that came up to me were really nice. They seemed interested in the project and were very attentive when I answered their questions.  There was this group of ladies -- I think they were teachers -- that stood out to me as they were really attentive and also encouraging. They probably saw that I was very nervous. All in all, this whole semester has been a great experience. Hopefully I will be back this fall. See you guys then!

Week 4

Hello everyone! This week I focused on finishing up all the gram staining for the bacteria I collected from one of the creosote bushes of PC. There are five samples: one is gram positive cocci, another is gram negative baccili, another is gram positive baccili, and the other two I think I will have to redo. One of the samples seemed to have two different colonies growing inside of it, as Josh noticed that there were some gram negative baccili and gram positive cocci mixed together. The second one that I have to redo is one that was really hard to see. Hopefully I'll get better results next week!       Also, since it rained yesterday, I went to collect another sample from the same bush. While I was taking the sample, I also recorded the CO2 levels. They seem to have decreased with the rain, I'm excited to see if the rain will also affect any of the bacteria. I'll update you guys on that next week!

What advice would you give your "freshman self" or your "first-day-at-ASU self"?

     The advice I would give my freshmen self would be to have applied for the STEM program earlier. I applied and began my time as an intern during my second semester of freshmen year. If I had applied earlier, I would have had more time to acquaint myself with more people and have more research time under my belt. It also would have been beneficial to start looking into research at West earlier to be prepared. I would also tell myself to stick with clubs more and try to enjoy my time at community college more. While it is great to look into the future, I also think it would have benefited me more to take a step back and appreciate my time there more.      The advice I would give to my first-day-at-ASU-self would be to get into some sort of research or other type of experience program. That was my original plan going into university, however, I think I stressed myself out between all that was going on at the time and transferring, so I thought I would need a semester off to just focu
