Post 3: Degree Plans

 Hello everyone!

I hope you've all been doing well. Personally I've been having a hard time keeping up with everything this semester. I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like this semester in particular has been really difficult. 

This week's blog post is about what we think we're going to use our degree for. This and similar questions are difficult for me to answer because I'm not really sure what I want to do as a career. I have some ideas but I'm not sure if they're very realistic or if I will end up changing my mind and want to do something else. My current plans with my degree are to go into the field of conservation. I've done some field work before and I've found that I really enjoy it, so I'm thinking of looking into being a wildlife biologist or something similar. I just know that I want to do something to help others, the environment, and help make a difference. I've been trying to get as much general experience as possible that way I have a wide set of skills to offer, but I always wonder if I'm doing enough. I look forward to reading what everyone's plans are :)

Week 14

Hello everyone! This is the last week of the semester. I'm kind of relieved, but also sad it went by so quickly. The last conference was surprisingly a lot of fun. I was really nervous starting out, but things went pretty well. I actually got to answer a bunch of questions. The first judge that went up to me was pretty intimidating but all the other ones that came up to me were really nice. They seemed interested in the project and were very attentive when I answered their questions.  There was this group of ladies -- I think they were teachers -- that stood out to me as they were really attentive and also encouraging. They probably saw that I was very nervous. All in all, this whole semester has been a great experience. Hopefully I will be back this fall. See you guys then!

Week 4

Hello everyone! This week I focused on finishing up all the gram staining for the bacteria I collected from one of the creosote bushes of PC. There are five samples: one is gram positive cocci, another is gram negative baccili, another is gram positive baccili, and the other two I think I will have to redo. One of the samples seemed to have two different colonies growing inside of it, as Josh noticed that there were some gram negative baccili and gram positive cocci mixed together. The second one that I have to redo is one that was really hard to see. Hopefully I'll get better results next week!       Also, since it rained yesterday, I went to collect another sample from the same bush. While I was taking the sample, I also recorded the CO2 levels. They seem to have decreased with the rain, I'm excited to see if the rain will also affect any of the bacteria. I'll update you guys on that next week!

Goals

From when I began school until now, the changes in my goals have been pretty sporadic; there haven't really been many patterns, but I have had a good amount of both big changes and small changes. For the most part,  I did not really have a set dream that I aspired to get to one day. I would hear others talk about dream careers and goals and would try to come up with some of my own mostly just so I could add to the conversation. Once I got to high school, it seemed as if everyone was pressuring me to choose a path. I think that was one of my biggest shifts. High school was when things had to become more concrete, instead of just abstract conversation fillers. A veterinarian seemed to be the path that combined both my interests and seemed to be stable. However, now I have strayed far away from when I thought about being a veterinarian. Also, my mentality has shifted. Instead of trying to aim towards an end goal which I am still uncertain about, I am trying to find as much experience
